Fund raising for ‘The Charity Chariot’ – in association with Water Aid and Birdlife International
This year I am involved in a charity event taking part in South East Asia.
As part of the 2012 ASEAN Rickshaw Run, ‘The Charity Chariot’ will travel along seemingly lawless highways (if you have seen the Top Gear Christmas Special), cross the perilous Malacca Straight with its busy shipping lanes, continuing through dense Sumatran jungle, along dangerous mountain tracks and battle through the chaotic streets of Jakarta to the finish.
There’s no guarantee of making it the 2800KM to the finish line and no back up support trucks. It’‘s just us, our unreliable motorised tin on wheels, and three of the most challenging and scenic islands in South East Asia.
We really hope you can help us in raising a massive pot of money to give to these charities especially with recent flooding in Bangkok, Water Aid is a fabulously appropriate charity to be supporting as is Birdlife International. You may wonder what this is well, Harapan Forest is a project in the depths of Sumatra which is trying to save a good chunk Sumatra’s last-remaining rainforest. The good fellows who run this project have managed to get their hands on 100,000 hectares of rainforest, and they want to keep it that way.
Sumatra’s forest is dwindling fast. There remains, of an original 16 million hectares, only around 500,000 hectares. Harapan Forest therefore represents 20% ish of all the forest that’s left, one of few remaining habitats for jungly beasts of all kinds not to mention all those trees pumping out some jolly nice O2.
Over the next few years, unless people like you help by donating, the remaining forest will vanish. The world will say goodbye to what was one of Indonesia’s greatest pieces of heritage, and one of the Earth’s most important resources in terms of biodiversity, carbon absorption and general jungly goodness.
Put bluntly, humanity’s going to find itself in a whole heap of trouble if we don’t act now.
If you think you would be able to spare any amount to sponsor ‘The Charity Chariot’ please choose from one of the following links. Please note donating here does not put you in the raffle for the violin.
